Canadians 2010

January 16th, 2010 –
It was an exciting and emotional day at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.  The pairs, women and dance events came to a conclusion with many excellent performances.

In pairs, Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch of Western Ontario were the highest ranking Ontario team, finishing fifth with crowd-pleasing free program.  Kaleigh Hole and Adam Johnson, also from Western Ontario, moved up three spots to finish seventh overall.  Brittany Jones & Kurtis Gaskell, WO, finished ninth and Monica Pisotta & Michael Stewart, CO, followed in tenth spot.

Diane Szmiett of Western Ontario was the top Ontario finisher in the women’s event, moving up to fourth place overall.  Central Ontario’s Adriana DeSanctis finished in sixth.  Rylie McCulloch-Casarsa had an amazing free program, finishing 7th in the long and moving up from 16th after the short to 9th overall.  The remainder of the results in women are as follows: Daniela-Bella Favot, WO, 11th; Kristy Bell, WO, 14th; Alexandra Najarro, CO, 15th; Erin Scherrer, WO, 16th; McKenzie Crawford, WO, 17th.

Ontario teams dominated the dance event, filling the top five spots.  Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir of Western Ontario mesmerized the crowd and took the Canadian title with a new Canadian record score of 221.95 points.  In a very close and well fought battle for second place, Vanessa Crone & Paul Poirier of Central Ontario finished 0.30 points ahead of Northern Ontario’s Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje.  Kharis Ralph & Asher Hill of Central Ontario and Allie Hann-McCurdy & Michael Coreno of Eastern Ontario both skated charming programs and finished fourth and fifth respectively.  Rounding out the rest of the event were Sarah Arnold & Justin Trojek of Western Ontario in 10th, Sophie Knippel / Benjaman Westenberger of Central Ontario in 12th and Helene Letourneau & Kevin Boczar of Eastern Ontario in 13th.

Tomorrow features the mens free program and the exhibition gala.

January 15th, 2010 –
It was an exciting finish to the day last night with Ontario skaters winning both the Junior Pair and Junior Women events.  Eri Nishimura of Central Ontario won the Junior Ladies title and Western Ontario’s Margaret Purdy & Michael Marinaro took gold in Pairs.

Medal ceremonies took place for all Junior events – photos can be found in the Canadians 2010 photo gallery.  The BMO Possibilities Awards were also presented with Alexandra Paul & Mitchell Islam and Abby Carswell & Andrew Doleman taking home a $500 training grant from BMO as well as a glass sculpture.  Baily Carrol and Peter Gerber were then presented with the Underhill/Martini Award (photo, right).  See this article on the Skate Canada website for more details as to why these deserving skaters were selected for these awards.

January 14th, 2010 –
The 2010 BMO Skate Canada Junior Nationals and 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships are underway in London, Ontario.  While the Senior events are just beginning with the Compulsory Dance later today, the Junior Nationals events are wrapping up with the free programs in all Junior disciplines today.

Novice events finished earlier this week with Ontario skaters medalling in every event.  Shalena Rau & Phelan Simpson won bronze in the Novice Pair event.  Kelly Oliveira & Jordan Hockley were the champions of the Novice Dance event, while Edrea Khong & Edbert Khong won silver.  Peter O’Brien placed third in Novice Men.  The Novice Women’s Champion was Kimberly Moon-Chong.  Congratulations to all!

Junior Dance finished this morning with an all Ontario sweep of the podium!  Alexandra Paul & Mitchell Islam won gold, Olivia Martins & Alvin Chau won silver and Abby Carswell & Andrew Doleman took the bronze.

Shaquille Davis finished only 0.17 points off the podium to finish fourth place this afternoon in Junior Men.
