Congratulations to All Members of the 2011 Canada Winter Games Figure Skating Team!
The Ontario figure skating team shone in Halifax winning 7 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals and having two skaters placing a close 4th in the twelve events they were entered. Individually, the athletes gave impressive performances and collectively the team of sixteen skaters placed first amongst all provinces winning the figure skating competition at the 2011 Canada Winter Games! In addition, these medals contributed to Ontario placing first in Flag Points edging out Québec 312-301 points.
Skate Ontario is very proud of the strong performances of all members of the team who successfully represented Team Ontario at the Games:
Lisa Nasu-Yu from Ottawa won the Gold medal in Pre-Novice Women’s event placing first in both parts of the event.
Antony Cheng from Richmond Hill, placed 6th in the short program and 2nd in the Free program for an overall 4th place finish in the Pre- Novice Men’s event.
Hayleigh Bell and Alistair Sylvester from Milton and Stratford respectively, won both the Short and Free portions of the Pre- Novice Pairs events for a Gold medal.
Samantha Glavine and Jeff Hough from Ottawa placed 2nd in both parts of the Pre- Novice Dance event earning a Silver medal.
Biranna Clarkson from Essex, place 1st in the Short Program and 3rd in the Free, winning the Silver medal in the Novice Women’s event.
Denis Margalik from Mississauga was 4th in the Short, 2nd in the Free and 4th overall in the Novice Men’s events.
Shalena Rau and Phelan Simpson from Waterloo and Kitchener won the Gold medal in the Novice Pairs events with 1st placements in both parts of the competition.
Mackenzie Bent from Uxbridge and Garrett MacKeen from Oshawa placed first in the Novice Pattern Dance and 2nd in the Free Dance winning the Silver medal.
Carlea Wilkie- Ellis form Orillia, won the Gold medal in Level 3 Special Olympics, placing first in the two portions of her event. Carlea who was also a Flag ambassador, help assisted Team Ontario in accepting the Game Flag at the closing ceremonies.
Megan Morse from Cookstown placed 2nd in the Elements and 1st in the Program portion of Special Olympics Level 2, winning the Gold medal.
Jonathan Edwards from Ajax won the Gold medal in the Special Olympics Solo Dance event.
Thomas Babcock from Kingston placed 2nd in the elements and 1st in the program of the Special Olympics Level 2 Men’s competition placing first overall.
Skate Ontario would like to sincerely thank John Briscoe, Team Manager, as well as the team coaches Darlene Joseph, Scott Rachuk and Julie Dunlop for the outstanding support and guidance they provided for the athletes. We would also like to thank Dave Edwards who attended the Games as a chaperone, as well as Christine Craig, Mission Staff, who became integral components of our team.
