In an impressive showing at the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships, Ontario skaters are the 2011 Canadian Champions in three out of four disciplines. The event took place this past weekend at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria BC.
Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catherines and Dylan Moscovitch of Toronto performed two outstanding programs to earn them 187.63 points – winning the pairs competition by over 16 points. They will represent Canada at the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships which takes place in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei from February 15 – 20, 2011 as well as the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, which take place March 21-27, 2011 in Tokyo, Japan.
In the dance event, Vanessa Crone, North York, and Paul Poirier, Unionville, led an all-Ontario sweep of the podium with 164.21 total points. In a very tight race which separated first and second by only 1.03 points, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje of Waterloo took the silver medal with a total of 163.18. The 2010 Junior Ice Dance Champs, Alexandra Paul and Mitchell Islam of Barrie, snagged the bronze medal with 153.90 points in their very first year as Seniors.
2010 Olympic Champions, Tessa Virtue of London and Scott Moir of Ilderton, withdrew from these Canadian Championships to give Tessa more time to continue to recover from surgery. The duo is back on the ice and training. Providing they are healthy and prepared, Tessa & Scott will compete at the Four Continents and World Championships where they will be joined by both Vanessa & Paul and Kaitlyn & Andrew.
In a record setting win, Patrick Chan of Toronto reclaimed the Men’s title for the fourth time. He outclassed the rest of the field with a lead of over 56 points, amassing 285.85 in total. The huge points were well-earned – Patrick completed three quads over the course of the competition, including one quad-triple combination. He has opted to skip the Four Continents Championship but will headline the World Championship team.
The team for the ISU Junior World Figure Skating Championships in Gangneung, South Korea, February 28 – March 6, 2011 was also announced at the conclusion of the Canadian Championships. Ontarians who will be representing Canada include pairs team Brittany Jones, Toronto, & Kurtis Gaskell, Guelph; Alexandra Najarro, Richmond Hill; Andrei Rogozine, Richmond Hill; and dancers Kelly Oliviera, Toronto, & Jordan Hockley, Whitby.
Skate Ontario extends its congratulations to all skaters for an excellent Canadian Championships.
